Fetal Anatomy Scan

Your 20-week scan

What is it?

All pregnant women in the UK are offered a 20-week scan by the NHS.

It is an important and detailed scan performed by a sonographer who will check baby for 11 different conditions by assessing the spinal cord, brain, kidneys and heart amongst other elements of baby's anatomy.

It is optional if you want to have a 20-week scan or not, because whilst it is important not everyone wants to find out the information this scan provides.

Other names for the 20-week scan are the anatomy or anomaly scan.

An anatomy scan can be booked at either of Starlight Ultrasound's clinic locations with our real-time availability shown online. For urgent or emergency scans at short notice when we don't appear to have any availability please contact us to see if we can fit you in sooner.

When can I have it?

The recommended gestation for this scan to be performed is between 18 weeks and 20+6 weeks but for various reasons it can be 20-22 weeks for most people to have their NHS appointment so we can offer the anatomy scan from 18 weeks.

Very often people choose to book an anatomy scan at Starlight prior to their NHS scan because they can attend with friends and/or family and have the scan in a comfortable and reassuring environment.

Who performs it?

The sonographers at Starlight Ultrasound are able to perform the anatomy scan before 18 weeks, but in any event it can take place prior to the NHS 20-week scan, which people opt for so they can attend with friends and/or family and receive the peace of mind in a comfortable and reassuring setting. If everything is fine, then they can attend at the hospital almost as a formality and should there be an issue detected, they can go to their hospital scan prepared and already knowing.

You can book an anatomy scan at Starlight here.

Scans are performed by qualified sonographers and you can choose to book specifically with Laura Gardner, who is a clinical specialist sonographer and a senior registered midwife.
