Starlight Express Early Gender DNA Blood Test

Is it a Boy or a Girl?

Know sooner than ever before.

Starlight Express Clinical Early Gender DNA Blood Test

The most accurate early gender DNA blood test, available from just 6 weeks into pregnancy.

£150

You can work out the soonest date you can book your test for either based on your Last Menstrual Period (LMP) or your due date if you have been given one. Alternatively an early pregnancy scan can determine how far along you are.

You can book your test online or over the phone with Starlight Ultrasound - the test is available to book both as a standalone test for £150 or with an included early viability / early pregnancy ultrasound scan for £225. Either way, there is a £25 non-refundable deposit payable on booking, with the balance of £125 or £200 payable in clinic on the day of your appointment.

When you book, you will receive a confirmation by text and email along with automated reminders leading up to the appointment.

If attending an early pregnancy scan, please attend with a full bladder (approx. 1 pint / half a litre of water) otherwise there is no other preparation needed.

We strongly recommend booking the test with an ultrasound scan to ensure the pregnancy is far along enough (at least six weeks). A pregnancy of less than six weeks may not have enough fetal DNA to ensure a conclusive or reliable test result. Similarly an early pregnancy scan can also ensure a viable pregnancy is present in the first place.

You can book your test and viability scan here or by calling 01612601400.

Starlight Express Frequently Asked Questions

How does it work?

While every person has their own DNA in their bloodstream, a pregnant woman’s bloodstream also contains DNA from her unborn child. The test looks for male chromosomes in a small sample of your blood. If male chromosomes are found, that means baby is a boy. If none are found, baby is a girl.

What is the process?

All you need to do is book either the blood test or the blood test with an early pregnancy ultrasound scan. Starlight Ultrasound has two clinic locations, and attendance at either is essential for us to perform the blood test and/or ultrasound scan. This is a clinical blood test taken by a medical professional and is not an at-home kit that we send out; the test is not available as a finger-prick test, which are known to be unreliable.

On attendance at the clinic, a single venous draw of blood is taken from the pregnant lady and sent to the UK-lab in a 24-hour Royal Mail tracked package. You will be able to track the parcel to the lab and samples will generate a test result from the lab the same day they are received.

Is the test available to anyone?

We welcome patients to Starlight Ultrasound not only from all over the country but also from international visitors who are looking for the fastest and most reliable gender blood test. So long as the person having the blood test is at least 18 years old, it is available to anyone.

What preparation do I need to do before the test?

There is no preparation needed or special instructions to follow prior to the test meaning you can eat and drink as normal. If attending for an early pregnancy scan, please attend with a full bladder (approx. 1 pint / half a litre of water).

I’ve previously had a boy. Will that affect my results?

Previous pregnancies will not have an impact on this blood test. Clinical studies have shown that fetal DNA clears from mother’s bloodstream between a few hours to 2 days after birth.

Does who I live with impact the test results?

It doesn't matter if you live in an all-male or all-female household or even if you have pets of a certain gender - this is a clinical blood test taken from a vein of the pregnant lady. It is only at-home, finger-prick tests that are affected by male DNA of others in the household.

I’m having twins. Can I still have the test?

In the case of identical twins, if male DNA is found, then both babies are boys. If no male DNA is found, then both babies are girls. For fraternal twins (or more!), finding male DNA will confirm at least one baby is a boy, but cannot distinguish if the second is a boy or girl.

Do hormone disorders such as PCOS affect my results?

Starlight Express is a clinical DNA-based blood test, so hormones do not impact results.

Is this test safe?

Starlight Express is a non-invasive prenatal test, performed by a medical professional and it’s safe for both mum and baby.

How quickly can I get my results?

You will receive your result within 24-48 working hours of your blood draw, subject to any postal or courier delays. The test result is sent directly to the email address provided on the form which can be yours or someone else's of your choosing. You can opt for us to receive the result if you do not want to find out via email and instead prefer to obtain gender reveal confetti cannons or similar from us. The lab processing the sample is in the UK and operates Monday to Friday. Starlight Ultrasound cannot obtain your result any sooner.

Are results guaranteed?

According to the lab, the test is 99.9% accurate at 6 weeks into pregnancy and they have never had a wrong result. Starlight Ultrasound's own internal audits have found it to be 100% accurate. In both cases this is true when a viable pregnancy has been confirmed as being at least six weeks through ultrasound.

Starlight Express is the most accurate early gender blood test on the market although there is always a chance of an incorrect or inconclusive test result. If your test result does not match the gender of your newborn, you’ll receive a partial refund from the lab.

Starlight Ultrasound offers early gender scans from 13 weeks into pregnancy so for any further confirmation or reassurance, we invite you to book an ultrasound scan with Starlight.
