Abdominal & Renal Scan (£160)

This scan assesses the size, outline and structure of your abdominal organs including:-

  • liver
  • billary system
  • gallbladder
  • pancreas
  • spleen
  • kidneys
  • urinary bladder, including checking the bladder empties completely post-micturition.
  • aorta - this scan also includes an assessment of the condition of the aorta looking for any signs of aneurysm or aortic narrowing from plaque or calcification build-up. 
  • prostate

This abdo-renal ultrasound scan assesses for any cysts, masses or stones, checks the condition of the aorta and assesses the patency and blood-flow of the portal vein.

This scan may detect issues such as gallstones, kidney stones, polyps, signs of liver disease and aortic narrowing.

It also includes assessment of the prostate.

This scan is not applicable or suitable for lumps/bumps or hernias which are not areas of ultrasound currently offered.

Written report provided same day.

You must fast from any food for FOUR hours prior to this appointment and attend with a full bladder. of approximately one pint of clear fluids.

Renal Scan / Kidneys Urinary Bladder Scan (£110)

This ultrasound scan assesses the shape, size, outline and structure of the:-

  • kidneys
  • urinary bladder
  • prostate

It looks for cysts, masses, stones, fluid and polyps.

The scan checks if the bladder empties properly post-micturition plus this scan may also include an assessment of the prostate.  

Issues such as renal calcifications, kidney stones and hydronephrosis may be detected at this scan.

A written report provided the same day as your appointment.

A full bladder is required for this scan, which means approximately one pint or half a litre of clear fluids. You do NOT need to fast before this scan.

Aorta / Aortic Aneurysm Scan (£90)

The Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening is an ultrasound scan which assesses the condition of the aorta.

The scan is looking for any signs of aneurysm or aortic narrowing from plaque or calcification build-up. 

This scan can be booked by anyone without a GP or specialist referral.

All men living in England are invited by the NHS for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening the year they turn 65.

If you do not yet qualify for NHS screening, but you may be at higher risk you can book an aorta scan at Starlight.

You may be at higher risk if:

  • people in your family have had an abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • you have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • you smoke

A written report is provided the same day as your appointment.

There is no preparation needed for this ultrasound scan. You can eat and drink as normal.

What does an abdominal ultrasound check for?


An abdominal ultrasound checks organs such as your liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys for structural abnormalities, inflammation, stones, cysts or masses.

Is this scan painful?

No, you shouldn't experience any pain as a result of an ultrasound scan.

Do I need a full bladder?

When you book a scan, you will receive confirmation text and email including instructions on whether to attend with a full bladder and whether you need to fast from any food prior tp your appointment.

How fast are results?

You will usually receive feedback during your appointment and receive a written report by email the same day as your scan appointment.

What symptoms require an abdominal scan?

You can book a scan if you are experiencing any abdominal pain, if you are waiting to be referred for an NHS scan or if you have a family history of any condition covered by this scan.

Who performs the Men's Health Ultrasound scans?

Your scan will be performed by a fully qualified, medical sonographer.
